Hepatitis C doesn’t need rigorous treatment in its initial stages. However, if the condition is chronic in nature, you would have to take certain drugs and medications for preventing the virus from spreading further.

You would need treatment if –

4 You have been detected with a positive hepatitis C test that predicts that the virus has been circulating in the bloodstream

4 Your biopsy report reveals potential liver damage

4 You have elevated liver enzyme levels in your bloodstream, known as alanine aminotransferase

But if you have just about slight abnormalities with the liver, the doctor might prefer not to prescribe any medications, since long-term treatment can have detrimental effects on health.

On the contrary, as there isn’t any evidence that can truly predict the chances of developing liver disease in the near future, the doctor might recommend some anti viral medications for fighting the viruses. Instead of approaching the condition aggressively, it is wiser to use improved methods of treatment, followed by proper diet and rest, for preventing the condition.

Drug Therapies

Hepatitis C can be treated with drugs and medications, the standard practice of treating hepatitis C is through a weekly injection. The drug pegylated interferon alfa in conjunction with ribavirin (twice-daily oral dose) is given in the form of an injection as an antiviral agent.

The primary aim of the hepatitis C treatment is to eliminate the virus completely from the bloodstream. The combined dosage of this injection helps in clearing the virus by almost 40-80 percent in people who have been given this medication. However, the success rate is highly dependent on the infection type and its severity.

The duration of these treatments are likely to depend on the speed of recovery. Usually, the period of treatment ranges from 24-48 weeks.

Though these medicines are the only choices for hepatitis C treatment, they can have some side effects as well. Interferon often causes flu-like symptoms that are severe in nature, followed by irritability, memory and concentration problems, depression, fatigue, and insomnia and skin irritation.

On the other hand, Ribavirin causes anemia, nasal congestion, itchiness, fatigue, skin irritation and birth defects.

The combined therapy of ribavirin and pegylated interferon can cause suicidal behavior or psychosis in few people. This is one of the reasons why this treatment is not recommenced to people having a medical history of uncontrolled depression. Also pregnant women and people having thyroid problems are exempted from this treatment.

Side effects of these medications are usually at its worst during the first two weeks of the treatment. But improvements are likely to be noted after that.

Liver Transplant

Liver transplantation is seen as another treatment option for extensive liver damage. When the liver has been damaged critically and it is in its last stages, transplantation is the only way to get back to normal course of life. However, there are very few donors to fulfill the huge requirement of liver transplantations in various nation.

Immunization

Though not a treatment, but immunization is definitely a prevention that must be taken by every individual. If an individual has hepatitis C, precautions must be taken for preventing the other hepatitis viruses form infecting the same, and immunizations are the ultimate way of preventing these viruses.

There are numerous vaccines for hepatitis B that can be availed from the market today. They are usually given in series comprising of three immunizations at the age of 0-1-6 months. But this can also be given as accelerated 4 dose schedule. Another dose can be given in 2 different doses during adolescence (11-15 years). These vaccines can protect children and adults in 90% of the cases, to a large extent and the protection period lasts for more than 23 years.

Anyone can receive this vaccine in their lifetime, be it infants or adults. Infants are usually given this medicine during the first year of their birth at the age of 2 -4-9 months respectively.

Apart from vaccines, there are several ways of preventing hepatitis B and this includes:

Proper knowledge of the disease: You must first educate yourself. Learn all about the disease, how it strikes, what are the causes and how can the same be prevented.

Know whether your sex partner has HBV or not: Do not engage yourself in sexual activities with a person who has HBV infection. This disease is highly transmitted to the other partner sexually. So be careful.

Use polyurethane or latex condoms for safe sex: Protected sex can help in preventing these diseases from being transmitted. Use condoms during sex to be on the safer side. Females can also use female condoms for protection. But of course, condoms aren’t an effective way of preventing the disease, as the condoms can break, thus making it risky. So it’s better to be cautious.

Needles must be sterile: Always ask for sterile needles or fresh ones during an injection. If you are injecting illicit drugs, make sure the needles being used are sterilized properly.

Seek medical help before traveling: If you’ve been planning to go abroad to such a place where hepatitis B is prevalent, make sure you seek proper medical assistance. Take your vaccines in advance before traveling.

Be careful about the blood transfusion techniques in some countries: Though blood transfusion in most of the countries is strictly screened, but in some countries, the risk still prevails. It is always better to ask for a proper screening of the blood sample before it is given to someone else.

Get tested during pregnancy: Pregnancy is one of the crucial stages where hepatitis B can play havoc. Get tested during pregnancy and if you are diagnosed with hepatitis B virus, steps can be taken to protect the child from being infected. Though chances of infection are high, but with proper care at the initial stages, it can be prevented.

If you have already been infected by the HBV virus, try to

Have safe sex: Having safe sex would help in protecting your partner from the disease. Use condoms so that the disease doesn’t spread any further.

Inform your partner about your disease: You can always do that to protect him/her from the disease.

Don’t share your personal items: Prefer not to share your razors or toothbrush with anyone else.

Do not donate blood: Donating your infected blood can spread the virus to someone else.

As there isn’t any medical treatment option for curing hepatitis At home treatments seem to be a good solution to the condition and can relieve symptoms very easily. Also these home treatments can as well help in preventing the virus form spreading any further. Follow these steps:

Reduce Your Activities—

4 Your activities must match your energy levels. Don’t just lie down as that might slow down your process of recovery. Listen to what the body has to say and give up when you feel that the body isn’t permitting any longer.

4 Stay back at home instead of going to work or to school or college.

4 Don’t strain yourself.

4 Once you feel better, get back to your daily course of life.

Eat well and eat right—

4 When you are suffering from hepatitis A you might not feel like eating. But it is very important that you supply the body with the desired amount of nutrition. Try eating frequently and have small meals. Eat everything that you want to, except unhealthy junk and oily foods. Fresh fruits, vegetables, proteins are the best foods to be eaten.

4 Earlier, doctors always recommended high-calorie diet to hepatic sufferers. But of late, this idea has changed and now doctors recommend a wholesome meal comprising of all the essential nutrients. A balanced diet is what you should be looking at.

Don’t dehydrate yourself

4 Keeping yourself hydrated is the most important thing while you are suffering from hepatitis, and more so if you have been vomiting as well. You must seek medical advice immediately if you are vomiting too much.

4 Drink ample amount of water.

4 Have fruit juices and /or broth to give yourself some additional calories.

4 Some sports drinks help in replacing the essential electrolytes as well what you might have lost due to excessive vomiting.

Give up drugs and alcohol

Hepatitis is a liver impairing disease and breaks down the ability of the liver to accept certain medicines and alcohol especially. If you have been taking alcohol or certain drugs during hepatitis, some potential side effects must be noticed. Additionally, in some cases, the medicines and alcohol can worsen the damage caused.

Inform your doctor about all the medicines that you’ve been taking, including any alternative natural or herbal treatments. Avoid taking any medicines or even replacing the existing medicines without the doctor’s consent.

Alcohol can aggravate situations further and as such you must avoid alcohol as much as possible.

Control Your Itching

Hepatitis effected people tend to develop an itchy skin. Some over-the-counter medications can be used for treating the condition. However, you must beware of the side effects of such products.

Prevent the infection from spreading all over

If you are having a hepatitis infection, you can take some of the following steps to prevent others from being infected:

4 Inform your near and dear ones about the disease and especially inform your sex partner.

4 After using the bathroom, wash your hands thoroughly to avoid any further disaster,

4 Avoid anal contacts with your sex partner when you are infected.

Hepatitis E happens to be one of the viruses that can cause potential liver damage. The disease is quite similar to that of the disease caused by hepatitis virus. There are certain facts about hepatitis E that everyone must know, since it is a disease that can lead to severe consequences.

First Point …

Hepatitis E is a “self-limited” disease, which means that the disease does not require any medical treatment and can eventually subside on its own with the help of the immune system of the body. Doctors usually provide some supportive treatment in this condition with the use of certain medicines that can control nausea and prevent dehydration. However, there is nothing needed for hepatitis E specifically.

Second Point…

Hepatitis E is an acute condition. This clarifies that the disease will not be chronic like other types of hepatitis (B and C).hepatitis E also doesn’t lead to any serious diseases like cirrhosis or cancer. But that doesn’t mean that things can be taken for granted, as hepatitis E can lead to a severe complication called fulminant hepatitis failure.

Third Point…

Hepatitis C is more of a gastrointestinal disease. Diseases like these usually involve the intestine and the stomach. This being the condition, hepatitis E is usually accompanied by diarrhea and vomiting. However, alike every other types of hepatitis, the symptoms of hepatitis E are also similar to flu and include fever, nausea, abdominal pain, muscle pain, joint pain and appetite loss. Hepatitis E usually involves jaundice, but it is also possible that the disease would not be accompanied by any symptoms of jaundice.

Fourth Point…

Hepatitis E spreads through the fecal-oral path. When viruses spread through the fecal-oral path, it is usually caused due to infected feces ingestion and mostly through contaminated water. By drinking pure and clean water, chances are that you would be reducing the risk of developing hepatitis E and hepatitis A. also you must wash your hands thoroughly after eating or after coming back home from outside.

Fifth Point…

Hepatitis E is not a critical problem in America. However, it is endemic and exists in certain places in Northern as well as Northeast Africa, Southern as well as Southeast Asia and in Mexico.

Sixth Point…

Hepatitis E, alike every other type of hepatitis, including A, B, C and D is dangerous for pregnant women. Though there has been very limited research on this issue, but it is assumed that during the third trimester, if the would-be mother gets infected with the hepatitis E virus, the infection can as well spread to the baby from the mother, thus causing potential damage to both.

Hepatitis E should not be treated as a mild condition and precautions must be taken from the very beginning of the disease. Though the disease seems to have mild to moderate effects on humans, but in some cases, conditions might worsen. Proper care must be taken for pregnant women and their babies. Hepatitis is a common condition during pregnancy and therefore expecting mothers must ask the doctor for hepatitis tests from time to time.

Hepatitis D is caused by hepatitis D virus or HDV and it infects the liver. It is almost similar to other forms of heatotropic viruses it also causes inflammation of the liver and produces very similar symptoms. But HDV is quite an unusual infection. It only affects people who already have the hepatitis B virus, because it is known to be a “defective virus”. HDV lacks the essential equipment that helps in replication, so to form this complication HDV has to depend on hepatitis B virus for the process of replication.

Hepatitis D can cause 2 types of infections:

Co-infection

Super-infection

Co-infection occurs when an individual is effected by both the HBV as well as the HDV viruses, at around the same time.

Super-infection occurs when a person already has the HBV and is further infected with the HDV. This is mostly acute, but in some cases it might be chronic as well.

Co-infections mostly acute and tends to resolve all by itself, while super-infection is likely to get more serious. Due to super infections, the mild form of cirrhosis can even get more severe in nature, thus becoming progressive cirrhosis. Some cases might as well progress to become fulminate hepatitis.

The Symptoms

The symptoms of hepatitis D are quite similar to the symptoms of any other forms of hepatitis disease, but are more severe in nature. However, the disease is triggered by the hepatitis B virus and the hepatitis D virus would not last longer than the hepatitis B virus.

Diagnosis

Hepatitis D, similar to other viral hepatitis diseases, is diagnosed by a routine blood test. Doctors typically test people for hepatitis D when you have progressive symptoms of hepatitis B. In such cases, the doctor would recommend a blood test to identify the virus that causes acute and/or chronic hepatitis D infection, including the antigens like HDAg and HBAg. Based on the severity of the infection and the pattern of the disease and the result of the blood test for hepatitis B and D virus, the doctor would determine your infection. It would help in identifying whether the infection is acute or chronic or a super-infection.

How Does the Hepatitis D virus spread?

Hepatitis D virus also spreads in the same way as the hepatitis B virus – when a person comes in contact with someone else’s infected blood, it leads to the infection. Hepatitis D is a rare disease in America and other such developed nations. In these nations, the hepatitis D virus is found in people using IV drugs. Also poor hygiene is highly associated with the development of the same.

How is the condition treated?

Interferon therapy is used for treating chronic cases of hepatitis D, either in standard form or pregylated form. However, the antiviral agents that can be used for treating the symptoms of hepatitis B aren’t really effective in treating hepatitis D. In some chronic cases of hepatitis D, liver transplantation becomes essential.

How can the disease be prevented?

Well, there isn’t any vaccine for hepatitis D. But the vaccine given for hepatitis B can take care of hepatitis D virus as well. As hepatitis D is dependent on hepatitis B, preventing one would lead to the prevention of the other.

Hepatitis C is one such disease that is caused by a viral infection that affects the liver. In course of time, hepatitis C can as well lead to permanent damage of the liver. It can cause diseases like cirrhosis, liver failure and liver cancer in some rare cases.

Most of the people fail to recognize the disease till the time it actually affects the liver and causes extensive damage. This might take several years as well. Some people might also suffer from hepatitis C that is short-lived and tends to improve over time. This form is known as acute hepatitis C. But usually people are infected with the hepatitis C virus that develops a long-term disease and is known as chronic hepatitis C.

Though hepatitis C is a very serious condition, but some people can actually manage to deal with the disease and live a healthy life.

The Causes

Hepatitis C is a viral disease and is caused by the virus hepatitis C. it usually spreads through contact with infected blood.

You are likely to get hepatitis C if:

The same needles are shared with people having infected blood for injecting illicit drugs. This is one of the most common ways though which the virus spreads in America.

You’ve been through blood transfusion before 1992, since after that period, all the donated blood in US is thoroughly screened for the virus hepatitis C.

You’ve been shot by the needle that had infected blood on it. This usually happens in states where they use one single needle for injecting many people at a time.

In some rare cases however, pregnant ladies having hepatitis C can spread the virus to their babies in the womb or at the time of birth.

It has not been proven yet whether or not the hepatitis C virus can spread sexually. If at all there is any risk of sexual transmission, it would be negligible.

Hepatitis C does not spread through casual contact like kissing, hugging, coughing, sneezing or sharing the same drink or food.

The Symptoms

Usually, people do not experience any symptoms after they are just infected with hepatitis C virus. However, if the symptoms at all manifest, it would be range from:

Fatigue or tiredness

Abdominal pain

Joint pain

Itchy skin

Dark urine

Sore muscles

Yellowish skin color

Most of the case of chronic hepatitis might not have these symptoms at all. This makes things difficult and people often go on without treatment for 15 years and above.

Diagnosis

Hepatitis C is mostly diagnosed accidentally when the blood sample has been sent for some test or before blood donation. It is otherwise very difficult to understand whether a person has hepatitis C or not. People suffering from hepatitis C are also likely to have higher levels of certain liver enzymes in the blood.

Usually, a routine blood test can detect the presence of hepatitis C virus. In rare cases though, liver biopsy and other such tests become essential.

Treatment

Hepatitis C can be treated with antiviral medications. However, these drugs might not suit everyone. Also if the liver has not been damaged, the doctor might not suggest any medications at all.

If medications are recommended, it would be a combined dose of 2 medicines that can combat infection, such as ribavirin and peginterferon.

Hepatitis B is an infective virus that affects the liver. Most of the adults suffering from hepatitis B have a short-lived episode of the disease which tends to improve over time. This is a case of typical acute hepatitis B.

An individual might have all or some of the symptoms of hepatitis B without even knowing that he/she is having the disease. In some cases, individuals might not experience any symptoms at all. If at all the symptoms manifest, one might experience flu-like symptoms. But till the time the virus is present in the body, it can highly spread across to other people.

There are times when this virus might cause long-term infections, which is known as chronic hepatitis B. Over time, this can as well damage the liver. Infants and children are more prone to this disease in its chronic form.

The Causes

Hepatitis B, as stated before, is caused by a virus. It is likely to spread through blood contact or through contact with any body fluids of the person who is infected. One is likely to get hepatitis B if

One is involved sexually with an infected person and doesn’t take any protection.

One shares needles with the infected person.

One shares the personal items, such as tooth brushes or razors with the infected person.

If a pregnant lady has the hepatitis B virus in her, it would be transferred to the baby at the time of delivery. However, this can be prevented if proper diagnosis is done in the initial stages to avoid the virus from infecting the baby.

The Symptoms

People suffering from hepatitis B often fail to realize the presence of the disease in them. The symptoms might just occur as flu, without giving any scope to the individual to understand why it is happening. However, the symptoms are likely to include:

Fatigue

Fever (mild to moderate)

Headache

Loss of appetite

Pain in the abdominal regions

Constipation or diarrhea

Skin rashes

Joint pain and muscle aches

Yellowish skin and eyes that seem like jaundice

Diagnosis

Hepatitis B can be easily diagnosed with a simple blood sample test. A blood test is enough to detect the virus. If you have been vaccinated previously, you might not have chronic hepatitis B.

In some rare cases however, if the liver is extensively damaged, a liver biopsy might be recommended.

Treatment

Hepatitis B tends to settle down on its own without any medications. Some healthy life style practices can help you in getting rid of the disease. Eating health, taking rest, drinking water and giving up drugs and alcohol can simply help in giving some relief.

Some drugs and herbal products can aggravate the conditions further to cause liver damage, seek doctor’s advice and give up such medicines.

The damage caused to the liver would determine the steps to be taken for treating the condition and this would be determined by the doctor.

Prevention

Hepatitis B can be prevented by adopting some healthy lifestyle practices, apart from taking vaccine.

While an individual is suffering from hepatitis C, proper care must be taken for preventing the disease from spreading any further. Lots of things can be done regularly to protect the liver from any further damage as well.

In conjunction with proper diet, exercise and correct medical assistance and emotional support, there are some other things that one has to keep in mind. Follow all these steps mentioned below to prevent the disease from damaging your liver any further.

Avoid falling Ill, Take Care

Certain other viruses like the hepatitis A or the B virus can also cause extensive damage to the liver, and people suffering from hepatitis C are more vulnerable to these viruses as well. A vaccination can help in protecting yourself against all these viruses.

Some other health complications can as well cause serious problems to people suffering from hepatitis C. HIV is one virus that can potentially weaken the patient’s immune system, thus allowing the hepatitis C virus to progress faster.

Using condoms during sex can help you in preventing such diseases and might as well protect you from certain STDs.

Sleep Well

People suffering from hepatitis C usually have a tough time sleeping, and more so during the treatment. These patients fail to sleep due to some undefined reasons.

Since the patients don’t get enough sleep, it can have a huge impact on the health. The condition is characterized by extreme fatigue which is primarily caused due to lack of proper sleep.

There isn’t any cure for this type of insomnia that arises due to hepatitis C or the associated treatment of the disease. However, some sleep medications might help.

Be Extra Cautious About Drugs, Medications and Alcohol

The liver breaks down and then filters out all the substances from the bloodstream. This is the primary function of the liver. But with hepatitis C, the liver’s natural ability to carry out this activity would be reduced. This would allow the medications drugs, herbs and alcohol to stay back longer in the system, thus having a potential effect. Some of these substances might as well cause severe liver damage, especially in people having hepatitis C.

Common painkillers and other such cold remedies can be potentially detrimental for the health of the liver as these medicines have toxic effects. Even vitamins when taken in larger doses can have an adverse effect on the body. Some herbal remedies are also risky.

If you are suffering from hepatitis C, do not take over-the-counter medications necessarily. Also go for prescribed drugs.

Quit smoking as well.

Relax

It is very difficult to cope up with a chronic disease like hepatitis C, but you should learn how to relax despite of everything. Depression and stress are not the solution to anything. Instead try to relax and accept the course of treatment.

Do everything that is relaxing for you. Go out with friends, eat healthy, exercise, go to the gym and practice light exercises and keep yourself happy.

Be Practical

Hepatitis C is a complicated disease, but people do live long by fighting with the disease. Learn to be a fighter instead of just falling prey to the disease. Take your medicines, make certain lifestyle changes and see the difference.

While there are many antiviral medications available for treating hepatitis C, some alternative solutions also seem promising.

The complementary solutions to hepatitis C range from certain herbal remedies like licorice root, milk thistle, thymus extract and ginseng to certain therapies like massages, relaxations techniques and chiropractic care. Above 40% of the people suffering from hepatitis C, who have not benefited form the complementary treatment options say that these alternative solutions and therapies are a great help in lessening fatigue, boosting the immune system and giving them a well improved gastrointestinal function.

Some of the best alternative treatments for hepatitis C are noted herein:

Milk Thistle (Silybum marianum)

It is one of the most popular herbal remedies for hepatitis C and is a well researched ingredient. Milk thistle can actually reduce the liver inflammation and can act as an antiviral solution to the infection. The herb can essentially reduce the symptoms of hepatitis C infection in cases where they fail to respond to drugs like interferon. Though there isn’t any conclusive evidence on milk thistle, but it does not have any side effects and is regarded as safe to be used for liver infections.

Licorice Root (Glycyrrhiza glabra)

The root is basically the active component derived from the licorice plant. Studies have revealed that this root can actually reduce some of the associated complications of hepatitis C, including liver cancer. It can as well improve liver functions. The root can either be taken as it is or can be taken in combination with other drugs. However, licorice root needs to be used carefully as it can have significant side effects like high blood pressure, water and salt retention and loss of potassium.

Thymus Extract

It is derived from cow’s thymus glands. Since the thymus assists in regulating the immune function, it has been assumed that the extract of thymus can as well boost the immune system of patients suffering from hepatitis C. but there are very few studies to validate the fact. However, people suffering from certain immune problems must be careful while choosing this option as it can have some side effects as well.

Ginseng

Ginseng is known as an immune booster and evidences have proved that it can help in dealing with certain liver complications as well. However, there haven’t been many studies about ginseng and its efficacy in treating hepatitis C completely. Since ginseng has certain disadvantages, it can decrease the level of blood sugar and increase the risk of bleeding, it must be used carefully.

Schisandra

This is a Japanese plant and has been used for making traditional medicines in Japan. It has antiviral properties that can help in regulating the hepatitis C virus. However, there aren’t any evidences to support this fact related to the efficacy of the herb in treating hepatitis C.

Lactoferrin

This is a typical milk protein and is also found in our saliva and tears. Some studies have revealed that when lactoferrin is taken in the form of a dietary supplement, it can help in lowering the levels of hepatitis C, thus improving the liver function.

Apart from these, some relaxation techniques and acupuncture is said to be very useful in treating hepatitis C.

Acute fulminant hepatitis, better known as fulminant heptic failure or acute liver failure or fulminant hepatitis has become a fast growing and developing medical concern, which is caused due to the injured liver cells that cannot be repaired very quickly to support the system. This often causes the liver to stop functioning for a certain period of time that results in problems in some other parts of the body. There is a difference between acute liver failure and acute hepatitis- in case of acute liver failure, the liver dies due to the problem.

Since the liver is one of the most vital organs of the body, when the liver is damaged, other organs get affected as well. The human brain is largely affected due to liver failure and the injury caused to the brain during liver failure is known as encephalopathy.

The Symptoms

Encephalopathy is detected prior to the determination or diagnosis of fulminant hepatitis. Patients suffering form fulminant hepatitis must first show the signs and symptoms of encephalopathy. The key symptoms include behavioral chage, confusion, mental health concerns and lack of alertness. These symptoms might as well cause coma in some cases and can even cause death, if the condition doesn’t reverse.

The Causes

Viral hepatitis infection leads to acute liver failure. It is one of the most severe complications associated with hepatitis. In fact, the doctor would always keep this fact in mind while treating patients suffering from viral hepatitis. Though acute liver failure is rare, but is commonly associated with hepatitis A and B infections. Still, it is only about 1% people infected with hepatitis B and lesser percentage than that are infected with hepatitis A are likely to have fulminant hepatitis.

Another cause of fulminant hepatitis in America is acetaminophen toxicity. Acetaminophen, also called Tylenol, is a typical painkiller, like aspirin and can be availed over-the-counter. People who are frequent drinkers usually take acetaminophen in abundance and are at an increased risk of developing acute liver failure.

Treatment

The treatment involved for fulminant hepatitis is usually critical. Hospitalization is a must and patients deserve critical care service, since there are multiple problems that require dedicated intensive care. The primary objective of such treatment is to keep the sufferer alive for long to allow the liver to repair itself according to its own time or until and unless the patient can be sent for liver transplantation. But in some case, liver transplant is not advised medically for certain reasons and also there aren’t many livers available to be transplanted.

Being such a critical problem, fulminant hepatitis is potentially dangerous and can be fatal as well. Once diagnosed with the disease, patients must take proper care of themselves and especially of their diet. Alcohol is something that damages the liver to a large extent and needs to be avoided under every circumstance. People suffering from prolonged liver problems must be more careful than the rest and must as well take precautionary measures to prevent the development of critical liver complications like hepatitis types and fulminant hepatitis.
